I agree with you; task-creation has a place in the classroom and it can motivate students to examine their own texts. The simplest thing you could do is show them how to use gap fill making tools such as the ones on EAP Foundation (Smith, 2020) – see links New Academic Word List and Academic Collocation List. Have you used them before?
