          • Are there any mobile apps that you think (might) work well in an EAP context?
          • Are there any ideas suggested in the unit so far that you might like to try out with your EAP students?

              1. Yes, we are using Flipgrid, Duo Lingo, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft One drive.

              2. I am thinking to integrate more by using video camera, notes, and the google Earth in order to share student’s landmark.

              3. It will be a tool to support the learning journey – before, during, and after. They may use it in the time given with the clear instruction.

                  1. We use ms. teams as well. I believe some games offered by playstore can be beneficial for students’ learning.

                  2. I am even not aware of basic functions in mobile phone can be used for teaching tools. It got me thinking now. Perhaps I will ask students to take pictures of an interesting facts at an particular place and having them presented in the class while the classmates take notes for particular vocabulary or terms used in the presentation, or to save time, they can record the presentation and share it to the class

                  3. for online tools, it is a lot easier to use mobile phones. we can share leaning material a lot easier, they can download material, we can prepare self study materials that will help student learn at their pace and time. And it surely save paperwork “the literal work in paper”

                      Are there any mobile apps that you think (might) work well in an EAP context?

                      Mindmeister might be effective since it is an online mind mapping/brainstorming tool that helps learners capture, develop and share ideas visually during brainstorming.

                      Mentimeter can be used in order to increase the level of the engagement of our students by incorporating fun, cooperation and/or novelty.

                      Kahoot can be used to prepare tests/quizzes to check learning.

                      Are there any ideas suggested in the unit so far that you might like to try out with your EAP students?

                      I haven’t used note-taking apps in my classes before. I might ask my students to use this tool as their daily journal. They can write their take-aways after the sessions and then at the end of the week, I might ask them to share some of them in class.

                      If you are teaching online, how can mobile devices support your teaching and your students’ learning?

                      Since students have their mobile devices with them all the time content is accessible anywhere and at any time easily. Also, mobile devices make learning more interesting for students since content is delivered in a more interactive way with the help of quizzes, polls, videos and so on.

                          Thanks for your thoughts, @wiputra @dwi & @ggcosgun – yes, it’s good to remember that the ability to create lots of media (audio, video, images) is right there in the student’s pocket, so it gives us an opportunity to start reaching for those “Redefinition” kind of tasks which would otherwise be impossible. Gulcin – I like this idea of getting students to note their “takeaways” in the notes app and sharing them afterwards – I think I’ll steal that one! :mail:

                                  I really want to try Flipgrid – looks like it would work really well in my context.

                                  Yes – I definitely want to try using the camera more. My students are all working towards admission to art school, and tend to benefit a great deal from activities that harness their creative skills.

                                        Making use of the photos they already have in their phones is a good way to get students thinking creatively – there was a meme going round recently where you had to post 3 selfies from your phone (no new photos allowed): 1 x videogame hero, 1 x end of level boss & (can’t remember the other one) – this could be adapted to a lot of contexts for prompting discussions, I feel.

                                          I’ve long been using Weixin (a Chinese equivalent of Whatsapp) in my classes. It integrates a lot of functionalities and its group chats are great for uploading materials (usually as pdfs and videos), sending reminders, and having discussions. Now, having seen the suggestions in the “Practical ideas for using mobile phones with students” task, I am thinking of using its map functionality as well. Not yet sure exactly how, but I will figure something out – perhaps something to do with the dreaded map task in IELTS?…

                                              I think Flipgrid could be useful for my lessons, I’ll give it a try.  Sharing handwritten assignments with the class and discussing them with the group is another good idea worth a try. As well as using the camera recorder, it could help my students to improve their presentation skills as they could see themselves delivering their task. Another good idea could be to ask my students to save their 30 seconds thought in “notes” on their mobiles. After a few lessons or as a review they could go back to see how useful those ideas were and it could help them improve their  attention in class. [Note: 30’’ activity: At the end of every lesson I give my students 30’’ to think what they want to “take with them” from that lesson. They have to go through the lesson in their minds and think of the most relevant information/ideas from that day. Then they share their thoughts]

                                              For my online teaching I think Flipgrid on the mobile could be great as student could share their work and comment on tasks and performance.

                                                  Thanks for sharing your ideas @dawid and @nilsa. Maps app for IELTS map task is a great idea, Dawid! Also reminds me that there’s a map feature in Padlet now that might be suited to that task (I haven’t tried it personally, but it could be useful). I highly recommend anyone (students and teachers) to record themselves while presenting, Nilsa. It’s quite an eye-opener – I found it extremely painful to watch, but learnt a lot, so it’s definitely worth it!

                                                      I am now working with students working on their academic article writing. We work with several engines accessible through mobile apps such as google scholar and openknowledgemaps.org. We also work with mindup, canva and jamboard for collaborative brainstorming and mindmapping. We also use gsheet to record the topics we work on and the potential journal for the submission later. In the writing process we use gdoc. We also use any other application such as grammarly and paraphraser and summarizer tool to help us with the writing.

                                                      I think that mobile apps enable use to have virtual classroom. I believe that what can be done on site can be level up when we do it online through mobile phone. I believe that it is not the matter of what device we use but how well we design our teaching and learning to bring the cognitive, social and teaching and learning presences.

                                                          Definitely anything that allows students to share their ideas/notes/work with other students.

                                                          I’m a strong advocate of the flipped classroom though, and feel that since students are outside of the classroom far more than they are inside it, then they need to take full advantage of the social aspect while they are actually in the room with other students. Outside of the classroom, sure; get on that app gadget, make that video and share it, use that timer etc…

                                                          I like the idea of using maps, though not sure how it would work with ielts task 1 though as those tasks usually require candidates to compare past and present maps. They could be used to give instructions, either orally or written, on how to get from one place to another.

                                                          Definitely with MS Teams or a similar video conferencing app. I think there’s a type of flipped classroom model that can be utilised for online teaching whereby MS Teams allows the class to come together to share/socialise or group learn, and then outside of actual lesson time students can use their phones to research, or to create content to share with the group. Students can also be split into groups and then these groups can use MS Teams to do their project together, for example.
