              Hello,

We did not cover the use of bilingual corpora or parallel texts, and that is a subject that I am interested in as my background is in translation. Can you recommend any resources or readings?

Also, I would like to know what the main applications / benefits of learners’ corpora are.

              Regards,

Thank you for your question @powla Unfortunately, we do not cover the topic as it is a little specialised as you can imagine. It is an interesting one, however, especially if you teach a monolingual class and share the same L1 with the students. Here, I am sharing some book titles you might find interesting:

                    • Parallel Corpora for Contrastive and Translation Studies: New resources and applications (edited by Doval & Nieto, 2019)
                    • Corpus-Assisted Translation Teaching: Issues and Challenges (Liu, 2020)
                    • Annotation, Exploitation and Evaluation of Parallel Corpora (Neumann, Čulo & Hansen-Schirra, 2020)

Some websites you might want to explore:

                    https://www.clarin.eu/resource-families/parallel-corpora

                    Parallel corpora

                    https://opus.nlpl.eu/

SketchEngine has some parallel corpora but we do not cover this since it requires people to have an institutional or personal membership.

Finally, you might also want to check these chapters:

Bernardini, S. (2015) Translation, in Biber, D. and Reppen, R. (eds) The Cambridge Handbook of English Corpus Linguistics. West Nyack: Cambridge University Press. pp.515-536.

Lawson, A. (2001) Collecting, aligning and analysing parallel corpora, in Henry, A. and Sinclair, J. (eds) Small Corpus Studies and ELT : Theory and practice. Philadelphia: John Benjamins Publishing Company. pp.279-309.

Anastasios, my apology for using this forum to send my query about the materials for further reading in next module.

the link for building a small corpus is not accessible (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MnR91EGqoU8fcIQvpaPZNdCh2o8CssBD/view). The other link is also not accessible (https://drive.google.com/file/d/193HAcYM1AzlKlcKXWR909Vf3y0nl2o6s/view?usp=sharing). Is there any other way you can suggest so I can access the files for my further reading? Thank you

Thank you for bringing this to my attention @siti-asmiyah I will have a look now and sort out the links that do not work. Could you tell me the author or title of the second link that does not work for you?
